Something I recently learned about - is that the word 'Dhyan' which means Meditation in Sanskrit or Hindi is the origin of the word "Chan" as used in Chan Meditation practices of Buddhism in China.
Furthermore, the same word Dhyana and then Chan is also the origin of the word Zen as used in Zen Buddhism and Meditation.
The Chinese Chan meditation techniques were imported from India from around the 2nd or 3rd century and then subsequently over the next few centuries spread to
Vietnam as "Thien" meditation and also
Korea as "Seon" meditation.
It became more popular with Japanese followers as Zen meditation.
The practice primarily came from the Mahayana school of Buddhism, which is one of the 3 main schools of Buddhism.
The other two schools are called Theravada and Vajrayana schools.
Not surprisingly, Zen practices are more oriented towards quiet contemplation of the mind rather than rigorous texts or rituals.
This is interesting because the word Zen is now used as part of popular culture vocabulary in today's Western society.
