Society - 26 people own more wealth than the combined wealth of 4,000,000,000 (4 Billion) people in the world!
One of the most troubling statistics that you can ever imagine is the following:
26 people own more wealth than the combined wealth of 4,000,000,000 ( 4 Billion) people i.e. 50% of the world's population!
I also read that, 55% of the population owns only 1.3% of global wealth.
It is hard to imagine so much wealth being held in the hands of so few when one in ten people survive on less than $2 a day.
It is not only disheartening, but it represents a serious injustice in global wealth inequality causing damage to our societies and undermining democracy.
The gap in wealth between the rich and the poor has been growing exponentially in recent decades. This is largely due to the increasing concentration of wealth, with the top 1% of earners consistently gaining higher returns on their investments.
It is also probable that globalization has had a major impact on wealth inequality. The outsourcing of jobs to developing countries has brought considerable wealth to companies in advanced economies while driving down wages in these other countries.
Compounding these economic factors is the long history of unequal opportunities in many countries. Racial minorities and other oppressed communities often face social and institutional barriers that make it difficult for them to gain access to quality education and jobs, meaning they are left behind in the race for a better quality of life.
