playing with the guitar - Em blues became Raga Malkauns

playing with the guitar - Em blues became Raga Malkauns

I am not a proficient guitar player. I am just learning. Started learning about 40 years ago in college days but then stopped. Recently in the last 3-4 years, I have again started picking up the guitar and learning self paced primarily from YouTube as well as certain books that I have borrowed from the library.

Raga Malkauns is a late night Raga from the Indian Classical Music traditions. A Raga is complex structure which is similar to a "scale" as defined in Western Music but many additional rules and nuances. I have written about  Raga in other blogs here, or you could check the internet info ...Raaga or raag or Raga ( same thing written in different spellings) .

E scale and E minor pentatonic Blues is a very appropriate scale to play on the guitar because it can use the open 1st and 6th strings which are both tuned to  E.   I tried to use that as a drone type of background to create the Indian Music instrumental performance effect.

Raga Malkauns is a complex raga and many many nuances in terms of repetition of notes, movement from ascending to descending, but in general the basic is usage of the following  notes of the scale . It is Pentatonic  with

Root , flat 3rd ,  4th, flat 6th, flat 7th

In Indian Music notation  Sa, komal Ga, Ma , komal Dha, komal Ni

BTW - Check my other blog on the Major Minor and Pentatonic scale basics...

On the Western music side -

The Minor scale is again sub-divided as

Natural Minor - 3 flats -    3rd , 6th , 7th notes are flattened.

Harmonic Minor - 2 flats -   3rd , 6th flattened

Melodic Minor - 1 flat -   Only the 3rd is flattened.

Pentatonic Scale :

Major : 1 , 2 , 3 , 5 , 6

Minor :  1 , b3, 4 , 5 ,  b7  [ in raga Malkauns , jut replace the 5th with flat 6th ]
