The True Essence of Music - technical prowess vs emotion expression -
The True Essence of Music
Music, at its core, is an expression of emotion. It is play, which is why we play an instrument—whether it’s the piano, violin, or any other. Like painting or sculpture, music is an act of creativity, flowing freely from the heart and soul.
However, the moment we start focusing too much on technicalities—such as theory, discipline, audience reactions, competition, financial success, or external validation—music begins to lose its original magic. It stops being a spontaneous expression of joy and turns into something rigid, a mere test of skill, perseverance, or dedication. While effort and practice are important, they should never overshadow the essence of music itself.
Music was never meant to be about making money, surpassing competitors, or winning awards. While these things may sometimes come as byproducts, they should never be the purpose of music. The true charm of music lies in its ability to move people, uplift the spirit, and foster deep human connection.
Unfortunately, in today’s world, these external pressures are becoming more dominant in the arts—especially in music. When music is reduced to technical perfection or commercial gain, it loses its deeper meaning—the ability to express emotions, bring peace, show devotion, or simply share love and beauty. It loses its soul and becomes mechanical.
Music should remain a sacred art, not just a technical craft. It should continue to be a source of inspiration, emotion, and connection—something that transcends skill and touches the heart. That is what truly makes music meaningful.
